The first book in a beguiling series from Philippa Gregory set in 1453, England, finds Luca, a young man studying for the priesthood, accused of heresy for using “modern” ideas. In reality, he has been recruited by the Order of the Dragon, in service to the Pope, to investigate evil. Luca’s first mission sends him to an abbey where the nuns are having visions and experiencing stigmata ever since the arrival of an orphaned heiress. Shut up in a nunnery by her cruel brother, Isolde is accused of witchcraft. But Luca is enchanted with the innocent beauty, and once they make their escape, the pair travels across Europe with two faithful companions—encountering werewolves, witches and death-dancers on the way!

Due to the author's name, I anticipated a good read. I am sorry to say that this story was slow with bad characters and an uninteresting plot. I can generally read a book a day, this book took a week. I had to force myself to finish it since I paid full price for it. SAVE YOURSELF SOME MONEY, skip this one.
