Charles Portis’ 1968 comic masterpiece True Grit tells the unforgettable story of Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl seeking to avenge her father’s death at the hands of a cowardly drifter named Tom Chaney, who summarily robs him of his life, his horse and $150. Along with her trusty one-eyed partner Rooster Cogburn—who just so happens to be the meanest available U.S. Marshal—Mattie pursues the grisly death into Indian Territory.
The basis for both the landmark 1969 John Wayne film and the Coen Brothers’ remake, this spellbinding book is a true American classic through and through. Like Mattie herself, Portis’ prose is eccentric, cool, straight and unflinching, confirming the author as a genuine cult auteur.

Entertaining. If you like Cormac McCarthy, you'll like.

This book was a great change of pace. And I loved it overall. Mattie is wonderfully endearing, and we know what a character Rooster is. But this shows sides of the characters not in the movies, and how well John Wayne put his own unique stamp on Rooster as well as giving him all that Charles Portis could imagine. On my keeper shelf, just as True Grit the movie is.
