Pride and Prejudice meets crime and punishment in Death Comes to Pemberley, P.D. James’ brilliantly crafted “sequel” to Jane Austen’s classic novel. The year is 1803, and Darcy and Elizabeth have been married for six years, when—on the eve of the Autumn Ball as the Darcys and guests are preparing to retire for the night—a chaise appears, racing dangerously toward the house. Inside is none other than Elizabeth’s sister, Lydia Wickham…and she’s screaming that her husband has been murdered.
Inspired by a lifelong passion for the work of Jane Austen, P.D. James has lovingly re-created the world of Pride and Prejudice and added to it the excitement of a well-crafted murder mystery. It’s an irresistible combination, and a true joy to read.

I am a great fan of PD James and Austen and eagerly awaited this.
Unfortunately I now wish I had just borrowed it from the library. I suspect that James will have an even greater literary reputation in the future than she does today, but this is simply not one of her best, and it's a long, long way from Austen.

James has been a favorite from the beginning and it is great to see that she has not slowed with the years. The premise is fun, the job outstanding and only Austin purists can quibble. It was great fun to see what Elizabeth and Darcy were up to in their later years. The mystery part was secondary. Great read!

but an interesting synthesis of styles and subjects. I suspect that readers who aren't engaged by this book are either Austen purists or expected the murder to have the forensic detail James usually provides. It takes some familiarity with Austen's work to appreciate the respect James shows it and how well she remains true to the residents of and visitors to Pemberley as they were originally conceived.

P.D.James is a favorite author, and delivers a good read, this time with the flavor of Austen. However, it was more like beloved characters were plopped into a who-done-it. It was a bit unsatisfying.

James does a wonderful job of keeping the flavor of Pride and Prejudice while weaving an excellent mystery. A fun read.
