When 'tween fans of a bestselling supernatural series hold an initiation ritual in an abandoned cemetery, the girls stumble on an actual corpse—a man stabbed through the heart, vampire-style. Two of the girls have impressive pedigrees: The grandfather of one is Chaim Salanter, one of the world's wealthiest men; the mother of another is Sophy Durango, the Illinois Democratic candidate for Senate. And the victim may have had ties to both.
For V.I. Warshawski, the questions multiply faster than the answers. Is the killing linked to a hostile media campaign against Durango? Or to Salanter's childhood in Nazi-occupied Lithuania? As Sara Paretsky’s Breakdown builds in suspense, V.I. finds herself fighting a monster who is all too human.

Always the same, cops don't like VI, VI has a chip on her shoulder. Fuss, fuss, fuss. I didn't even finish the book. I've had enough.

Warshawky is getting a bit older but still seems to be able to keep up with crime and the latest "in" thing that adds to the murder plot of this story. However, she is getting a bit long in the tooth for some of the antics that occur. Paratsky would like to make VI ageless and she almost does. A good fun read.
