Few authors have written about the cherished bond between humans and their pets as eloquently as Jon Katz in such acclaimed works as Soul of a Dog and Izzy & Lenore. Now, in Going Home, the New York Times bestselling author addresses the difficult but necessary topic of saying goodbye to a devoted companion.
Orson was the boisterous border collie that inspired the purchase of Bedlam Farm, and Katz was profoundly shaken by his death. Drawing on the personal experiences of others as well as his, Katz provides guidance to pet owners so that they can be open in their grief and, in time, celebrate the lives of their lost pets. Going Home is an invaluable guide to honoring the animals that graced our lives with such unwavering love.

This book was very helpful to me. I lost my beloved dog a few months before reading it, and was having a very difficult time. She had been with me for 13 years, and was a huge part of my life. I am divorced, and I never had children, so she was my closest companion. I cried all the way through the book, but it did help me find some peace and give me encouragement in moving forward. I am not ready for another pet, but one day I will be. I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with such a loss.

Jon Katz writes with understanding and compassion about a subject most of us would prefer not to think about. No matter how dear our animal companions are to us, they are not like us. They are not our children; they are not little people. Because their lifespan is not as long as ours, most of us will have to deal with the loss of a pet, perhaps more than once. This wise and thoughtful book recounts many stories of love, loss, and finding the courage to let go, in the knowledge that loss is the price we pay for love. We can never replace the animal that is gone, but we can find another animal that will further enrich our lives even as we offer it the love and care it deserves.

This book really helped me through the passing of my little dog. I loved her as if she were my child. And she was. Very very good book
