I'm John Corey, former NYPD homicide detective, wounded in the line of duty, retired on three-quarter disability (which is just a number for pay purposes; about 98 percent of me still functions), and now working as a special contract agent for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force.
The guy in the cubicle facing me, Harry Muller, asked, "You ever hear of the Custer Hill Club?"
"No. Why?" "That's where I'm going this weekend." "Have a good time," I said.
"They're a bunch of rich, right-wing loonies who have this hunting lodge upstate."
"Don't bring me any venison, Harry. No dead birds, either." I got up from my desk and walked to the coffee bar. On the wall above the coffee urns were Justice Department Wanted Posters, featuring mostly Muslim gentlemen, including the number one scumbag, Osama bin Laden.
Also included in the nearly two dozen posters was a Libyan named Asad Khalil, a.k.a. The Lion. I didn't need to memorize this man's photo; I knew his face as well as my own, though I'd never formally met him.
My brief association with Mr. Khalil occurred about two years ago when I was stalking him, and as it turned out, he was stalking me. He escaped, and I got away with a grazing wound; and, as the Arabs would probably say, "It is destined that we meet again to settle our fates." I look forward to that.
An Exclusive Note from Nelson DeMille Wild Fire is my fourth novel that stars John Corey, former NYPD homicide detective, now working for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force… If you’ve been following the Corey books, you know that John Corey has some problems with authority, with women, and with his own ego…. But in the end, he always comes through and gets his man—or woman. The premise of Wild Fire is very frightening—nuclear devices planted in American cities. But planted by whom? Sometimes, we need to keep an eye on our “friends.” It’s interesting to see how John Corey has evolved from Plum Island, when he was an NYPD homicide detective, to a contract agent with the Anti-Terrorist Task Force. This evolution is, unfortunately, a result of the times we live in and Corey is a product of these times. So, while street crime in New York City is down, the threat of domestic terrorism—once so distant and remote—is elevated, high, or imminent… As John Corey says to himself in Chapter Two: “Today is Alert Level Orange. Tomorrow, who knows? For damn sure, it’s not going to be Green again in my lifetime.” And as Corey is thinking this, someone else—a deliciously evil villain named Bain Madox—is about to initiate a plan that will change the world as we know it. It goes without saying that John Corey and Bain Madox are fated to meet and do battle. And to use a Corey expression, “Whoever comes in second is the first loser.” This is a good opportunity for me to thank the club members for their continued interest in my novels. I hope you enjoy this one.

This is the first book I have read by N. DeMille, it will not be my last. Loved the humor of the main characters, very believable and enjoyable.

This fascinating book had me turning pages and wondering how they would stop the bad guy! I enjoyed the banter between Corey & his wife. DeMille has a wonderful way of adding humor into a dangerous situation. The setting was so detailed that I did more research about the area he described. Drink lots of coffee and enjoy reading!

This is the first Nelson DeMille book I've read and I really enjoyed this book. I thought the plot was fascinating, although probably not plausable, still an interesting thing to think about! I told my boyfriend the plot of the book and he had not even read the book yet and kept asking me the whole way through, what's happening with the story? I though it was great, I would recommend this book to anyone!

I'm from the Adirondacks and DeMille did his homework researching this book. I especially loved when Corey visited The Point, a very exclusive lodge in the Adirondacks. I'm still laughing about the "pigs in the blanket" order for the chef. A quick, enjoyable read.
