In The Traveler and The Dark River, bestselling author John Twelve Hawks introduced us to a tech-obsessed world rigidly controlled by the all-seeing Brethren—a status quo threatened only by the prophet-like Travelers and the Harlequins who protect them. In The Golden City, the tension reaches an all-time high as the action hurtles to its thrilling conclusion. Struggling to protect the legacy of his Traveler father, Gabriel embarks on a journey that may lead to his death. His brother, Michael, now firmly allied with the enemy, pursues his ambition to wrest power from the leader of the Brethren. And Maya, the Harlequin warrior pledged to protect Gabriel, must make a choice that would change her life forever.

I agree with the other reviews, as far as the second book "The Dark River" being disappointing. I gave everyone on my Christmas list the first book "The Traveler" and held off on giving "The Dark River" until this book came out. This is a good book, but it does leave you wanting to know more. A lot of details that made "The Traveller" one of my favorite books (and favorite concepts for a book) are missing from "The Golden City". It ties up a few loose ends, but it seems like the author just wanted to tie up the loose ends, and not provide the thought provoking intrigue that exists in "The Traveler"

Spoiler alert! After investing my time in a trilogy, I really want closure at the end, and this does not deliver. The storyline through all three novels has kept me involved and absorbed, so I'm sad the ending didn't tie up all the knots into one neat package. However, the trilogy is well written and I look forward to more novels from John Twelve Hawks. Maybe he can conclude his next with an ending that ties all together and truly gives closure.

After reading the The Traveler, which was excellent, then the somewhat dissaponiting The Dark River, then waiting, and waiting,I purchased The Golden City when I first heard of it's pending release. Well, it was one of the worst sequels I have ever read! The plot was poor, and the ending left you in such disbelief! I was greatly disappointed!
