Better than I expected
July 26, 2006

Didnt really think anyone could come close to McAffrey when writing about dragons but this one comes close. Not really sure the Temeraire trilogy compares with Pern just because they arent the same at all. But for a book written with dragons at the heart and a dragon co-character, this book is way better than I expected - 4 out of 5 stars for me. Highly recommended

Excellent - Dragons with a new twist
July 20, 2006

I received this 3-in-1 book last week and read it cover to cover in 3 days (even going to work) - I could not put it down. Excellent writing and premise! I am a big fan of books that feature Dragons -- What I appreciate most in this one is that her dragons are not really like any others! They SPEAK (not communicate telepathically) and learn languages in the shell prior to hatching! Some are smart enough to pick up more languages in adult hood - -they are big enough to be the equivalent of a naval SHIP -- and carry multiple passengers and equipment (with good harnessing) -- Many creative, new ideas in here. (not to take away from any other authors mind you!). The Napoleanic era makes it even more believable -- The trip to China was fascinating -- I will have to read these several more times while waiting on the edge of my seat for the upcoming books in the series! Thanks for an excellent read - a new one in my favorites!

Wonderful, Consumed in large gulps
June 28, 2006

This is truely one of the best written, most engaging fantasy works I have seen in years. It is a real pleasure to read, gets and keeps you involved with all the characters. As soon as I finished it I went looking for more books by her and was astounded that this is her first! Buy it, read it, enjoy!!!
