Damaged

The moment foster caregiver Cathy Glass agreed to take in 8-year-old Jodie, she knew it would be a challenge. But even she, who had been sheltering children for years, was stunned when Jodie’s first act of defiance was to soil herself and smear it on her face, followed by a frightening attempt to slit her wrists—all the while wearing an I-told-you-so grin. Not one to give up, Cathy wins the child’s trust. And that’s when she learns the unspeakably dark secret of Jodie's sexual abuse… This heart-wrenching story paints a grim picture of man’s inhumanity. Yet it also shines a light on those who do their utmost to help. Jodie may be damaged, but with people like Cathy Glass, she won’t ever be beyond hope.

The story of an unfair start in life
November 16, 2009

Thank you Cathy for sharing Jodie's story. It was something that I could not put down. It brought tears to my eyes and loved that there is somebody as special as you out there to take care of so many little broken hearts. I would recommend this story to everyone. It is a beautiful story of a foster carer's love for helping a child in dire need of somebody's trust and attention.

Heartbreaking Story
November 11, 2009

I have not been able to read much since having kids but I wanted to rekindle my love of books by starting with a non-fiction book. My goodness this one is so well written and actually puts you in the set as you read about this poor little girl. I finished the book in 1.5 days because I just felt like I had to witness the entire story at once. I cried throughout the entire book because I couldn't believe the horrible things that happened to this angel in her very short life. I pray that God helps these angels rest in peace and lead semi-normal lives if that is possible.

Very good and Heart breaking

Everyone needs to read this book that is going to think about being a foster parent. It shows us how back this world has become because things like this is going on in this world today. There parents out there that are doing this to their own children and it makes me sick to think about it. I pray that God will take care of all of these children and give them a very place in heaven for them.

Very good read

I started this book on a Saturday morning and finished it by that evening...could not put it down. Very engaging. I really enjoyed reading a story finally written from the perspective of the foster parent and documenting her struggles with the system, and overall her ability to fight for what was right for the child, even when it was enormously difficult personally.

All too true.

I read the entire book in three settings and did a great deal of crying. I was appalled at the the parents and grandparents and the treatment of Jodie. It just broke my heart. I admire people like Cathy who have the capacity of unconditional love . Kathy and her family were totally committed to Jody. Without Kathy, Jodi would have been lost somewhere in the system. Thank you Kathy.
