P.I. Isabel Spellman is on high alert. Her mother’s joined a book group, her father’s got a secret, and sister Rae and brother David are on the outs for reasons they won’t share—all of which is driving Izzy crazy. So is, for that matter, trying to figure out why the only word her niece Sydney will say is “banana,” even though she hates them. Then, of course, there’s the caseload. Why is Rae faking surveillance reports on a cagey coed? And after a socialite hires the firm to follow her husband, a man hires them to follow the socialite. All of the above is helping Izzy avoid her boyfriend, Henry, who wants “to talk.” Confused? Welcome to the family! Trail of the Spellmans, fifth in Lisa Lutz’s addictive series, is hilarious fun.

I found this book to be a rather boring re-hash of a quite dysfunctional family of
would be private investigators spending more time checking on each other than doing anything of much value. The underlying "plot" was nearly non-existent and in the end
not much of anything was solved that required more than ten pages. I did manage to
finish the book with the hopes that Lisa can return to the writing produced in her
previous efforts,

The only saddening thing about this series was coming to the end of it. Characterizations expand throughout all five books; each one is more enjoyable than the previous book. Each character has his or her own zaniness. I only wish there could be more of the series. I would definitely buy at least five more Spellman books.

The Spellmans are a zany, dysfunctional family who run a private investigation firm. There will be at least one character that will remind you of someone in your own family. A light, quick read.

This series is always delightful, and Lisa Lutz's latest just makes you want to read the next, NOW, and re-read all the previous! Izzy is a funny, smart, and unconventional heroine. No spoilers, but this book hints that Lutz will be taking the series in some new directions, but with her trademark wit and zest. And Lutz thankfully gives some snarky, and necessary, extra documents in her appendix to ground the reader in her rather large cast of characters. She's a unique and remarkable voice, and always satisfying.
